We are different and that’s why I love you (2024)
South Korea is a largely homogeneous nation, but in recent decades, it has become home to a growing number of foreign residents. Hoping for Korea to become a society that embraces diversity and differences more openly, I created two short video pieces that combine live-action animation with 2D graphics or hand-drawn images over photographs.
Drawing inspiration from the iconic pose of Adam and God in Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam, I captured hands and arms in live-action video and transformed them into animation by scanning the stills frame by frame. In Michelangelo’s painting, Adam reaches out toward God in a symmetrical composition, evoking a sense of near connection—yet also distance. For this piece, I invited friends of diverse skin colors and cultural backgrounds, all based in Seoul, South Korea, to participate as hand models.
Even though we all have different appearances, skin colors, ethnicities, and genders, I believe we ultimately share universal emotions and a deep sense of humanity rooted in love. To express how our differences ultimately unite us as one, I depicted a circular form reminiscent of an eye.
